In the Fall of 2005, the College of Charleston launched a new interdisciplinary
program in Discovery
Informatics – the first undergraduate program of its kind in the country.
This emerging field
integrates computer science and
mathematics with specific application disciplines – called cognates –
Whether students
plan to enter the workforce immediately or pursue graduate degrees, this
ground-breaking program will both challenge them intellectually and prepare
them to be leaders... to address our growing need to obtain information from large, multidimensional
datasets, data streams, and complex systems.
An undergraduate major in
Discovery Informatics is being offered, as is a
minor in the
field.
With a minor, hosting departments can offer their
majors the opportunity to integrate computational tools as a complement
to the major. Arguably, a disciplinary major who also possessed the tools
and problem solving skills from mathematics and computer science will have
a nationally competitive advantage within the discipline. Whether students
plan to enter the workforce immediately or pursue graduate degrees, this
ground-breaking program will both challenge them intellectually and prepare
them to be leaders in the next stage of the revolution now taking place
in knowledge acquisition and knowledge management.
